in his Prison Notebooks (and other writings) Antonio Gramsci argued that the challenge of modern politics is to win the battle for cultural hegemony. For First Nations the challenge of everyday politics is to not just to revitalize language but also the essential context of cultural norms, values – our world view. We have been submerged under ideology of western culture for so long it is difficult to breathe - difficult to remember. But the process we have been going through and wish to continue is truly essential for the recovery and survival of our distinct cultural and ideological identity. Our ancestors look to us to restore the connection with them – with who we are collectively.
